More than almost any other landscape, deserts expose Earth’s geological processes and showcase how life, against all odds, finds a way to thrive. While they often appear barren, deserts are full of subtle activity and resilience, from plants and animals adapted to extreme environments to sudden bursts of growth after rain. Desert geology reveals layers and formations that record the Earth’s history and the forces that shaped these regions over millions of years. These landscapes are more diverse than they first appear, with varied colors, terrain, and elevations that offer unique opportunities for landscape photography. Living in western Colorado gave me easy access to some of the most striking desert landscapes of the Colorado Plateau, including Moab, the San Rafael Swell, and other locations nearby. Areas farther afield, such as the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts, also continue to draw me to visit. Experience the best of my desert work in this gallery.
